This is the story of a kid whose parents were too wrapped up in their own obsessions and addictions to care about the primal needs of a child that they should have been responsible for, a small boy's assumption of responsibility for his parents' dereliction and his lonely and futile attempts to compensate, to fix things, to fill the void.
Coming from a broken home myself, having dealt (or failed to deal) with abusive and violent step parents, the resultant upheavals, the emptiness and desolation at seeing my own absent father drive away after one poxy day visit, dumping me with my grandparents for the holidays instead of taking the opportunity to spend time with me this story opens up old, deep wounds.
It also acts as a cautionary tale for me as a father myself, maintaining the bonds with my own young children who are hundreds of miles away because of my own unwitting neg
