About the Author Arlo Bates, a poet, newspaperman, novelist and English professor was born on December 16, 1850 in East Machias, Maine. Bates graduated from Bowdoin College, receiving a Bachelor's degree in 1876, receiving his Master's in 1879. His work includes novels, poems and criticisms. The Pagans (1884), The Philistines (1888), The Puritans (1899), Prince Vance and The Intoxicated Ghost are some of his work.

While this novel is set in the late 19th century in Mexico, it shouldn't be regarded as something that only "western" lovers would appreciate. In moments, I found it truer than Salinger.
The color of truth is what characterizes this book for me. As Dante's twin, she also is a Pure Blood, but where he is a rather large Fox, she is a Kodiak Bear, and let me tell you she is more than a handful! Marianna wants nothing to do with the battle that has been brewing between the Purists who do not want to dilute the bloodline by marrying `human' half breeds-and those of the Amoveo who don't agree with this and want to see to the continuation of their people.
As Marianna is unmated, Dante gets wind that she is in danger from the psycho leader of the Bear clan and appoints Pete to be her bodyguard. Pollack describes the subtle ways women are discouraged from pursuing ST
