Editorial : From the Author From Lori Silverman: Stories provide a richness beyond what a short case study can provide in a training session. I personally use a number of the stories from this book and the activities that accompany them in workshops I teach on persuasion and influence, employee performance management, organizational change, ethics, leading versus managing, and the like. If there is a particular type of story you'd like and cannot find it in this resource, feel free to contact me. I have a library of stories I've captured over the last 15 years. Please keep in mind that for training purposes, both the content of the story and the story's key point need to resonate within your training and with participants.
It was Freudian anti-matter. This book reminds me some of Hannah Arendt's book on Eichman in which she discovers 'the banality of evil.' It is only fantastically horrible from outside. The book describes the agriculture of tobacco, and clearly shows how this lent itself to slave labor in contrast with many other crops.
The book includes numerous anecdotes of individuals involved in the history of tobacco, such as the Turkish ruler who would prowl his city streets in disguise asking pedestrians for an illegal smoke, and then beheade those kind enough and unfortunate enough to offer him the banned substance. Earlier in the book Pollack made it clear she disliked and felt competition with other women as a student.
